| "Do
You Know How Much You Are Suppose To Eat? Discover Your Basal Metabolic
Rate!"
By: Randall Gartman
I am going to provide you with a formula that I believe
the fitness and nutrition industry doesn't want you to know. It's
important for you to know that you can get fat by undereating, almost
as much as you can by overeating.
Now I will be honest, in the beginning, a starvation
diet will most certainly help you lose weight faster than overeating.
But let me define how weight loss occurs under a starvation diet.
- Water and electorlytes are lost first
- Muscle and and Proteins are lost next.
- Finally, body fat is lossed but it is generally
the last thing to leave your body, just before you die.
Here are some major reasons undereating causes weight
gain - »
If you continue starving yourself, your body begins
to break down muscle tissue for fuel. When protein is broken down,
it releases nitrogen and your body will quickly wash away the nitrogen
by releasing water from tissue cells, causing an immediate reduction
in water weight and a noticeable drop on the scale. However, when
you lose water weight it will be quickly regained as soon as you
have something to drink, and the missing muscle shuts drastically
reduces the efficiency of your metabolism.
You see, muscle is a metabolically active tissue
and it requires a certain number of calories each day to maintain
itself. If you have more muscle you can burn considerably more calories
just sitting around. When you start to lose muscle, you don't need
as many calories to function.
For example, suppose you lose 10 pounds of muscle
(along with maybe 20 lbs. of fat) on a strict diet. Each pound of
muscle had been burning 35 calories a day just sitting there so
those 10 pounds of muscle had been burning 350 calories a day. With
this muscle tissue gone, you now must consume 350 fewer calories
a day in order to maintain that weight-loss.
--That's how you create a never-ending yo-yo cycle.
To insure you get the correct number calories for
your body type and activity level, you need to determine your Basal
Metabolic Rate (BMR).
» Estimating Daily BMR for
Men 66+(6.22 x body weight in pounds) + (12.7 x height in inches)
- (6.8 x age) = Daily Calories
» Estimating Daily BMR or
Women 665+(4.36 x body weight in pounds) + (4.32 x height in inches)
- (4.7 x age) = Daily Calories
When you get your calculation, that is how many calories
it takes to sustain your body at rest.
Now, take your BMR and add your daily activity by
using the following equation.
BMR x Activity Level = New BMR
- 1.2 Very Low Activity
- 1.4 Low Activity
- 1.6 Moderate Activity
- 1.8 Active
- 2.1 Very Active
The end result is your new caloric requirement. If
you would like to lose weight safely, all you need to do is either
restrict your calories by taking in a little less food or by burning
more calories through additional activities; or better yet, equally
reduce your calories by doing both. However, never go too far below
the adjusted BMR number because you will fall back into the same
yo-yo rut.
Granted, you will still need to make good food choices
but this portion of the TipTow has been about quantity, not quality.
I hope you enjoyed this TipTow For Health eZine.
Remember; you are measured by the foot; with each
step you take you are one foot closer to success.
